Packing your hospital bag as a surrogate can feel a little different than packing for your own birth—and that’s okay. Your body is still doing something incredible, and you deserve to be comfortable, supported, and cared for during your hospital stay.
While every birth and hospital experience looks a little different, having a thoughtfully packed bag can help you feel more at ease and prepared. Below is a simple, easy-to-follow list of essentials to consider, with a focus on comfort, recovery, and honoring the work your body has done.
Comfortable Clothing (Comfort Comes First)
After birth, comfort is everything. Choose clothing that feels soft, loose, and easy to move in.
Consider packing:
Loose, comfortable pajamas or lounge sets
A cozy robe or cardigan
Soft socks or slippers
Comfortable underwear (or disposable options)
A going-home outfit that’s loose and non-restrictive
You’ve just gone through labor and birth—your body deserves gentleness.
Postpartum Care Essentials
Even as a surrogate, your physical recovery matters. Some hospitals provide basics, but I always recommend bringing your own favorites so you’re not relying on what’s available.
Helpful items include:
Adult diapers or heavy-flow postpartum underwear
Peri bottle (especially angled ones for easier use)
Tucks pads for soothing perineal care
Perineal foam or spray for comfort and healing
Dermoplast for comfort and numbing
These small comforts can make a big difference in how supported you feel in the hours and days after birth.
Entertainment & Comfort Items
There can be quiet moments during labor, recovery, or overnight stays. Bringing familiar items can help you relax and feel grounded.
Ideas to pack:
A book or magazine
Kindle or e-reader
iPad or tablet
Fire Stick or streaming device (if your hospital allows it)
Headphones
Phone charger (extra-long cords are a lifesaver)
Birth is intense, and recovery can be emotional—having something comforting or distracting nearby can really help.
A Note on Emotional Preparation
Packing a hospital bag is important—but it’s only one small part of preparing for birth as a surrogate.
Surrogacy carries its own unique emotional layers:
Supporting intended parents
Navigating boundaries and expectations
Processing your own physical and emotional experience
Transitioning into postpartum recovery
This is where preparation goes far beyond what fits in a bag.
How a Doula Can Support You
As a doula, my role isn’t just helping you remember what to pack—it’s supporting you before, during, and after birth.
That support can include:
Preparing emotionally for labor and the postpartum transition
Creating space for your needs, feelings, and boundaries
Supporting you physically and emotionally during labor
Helping you process your birth experience afterward
You deserve support that honors both the physical work your body is doing and the emotional experience you’re moving through.
If you’re a surrogate preparing for birth and want support that goes deeper than a checklist, I’d love to walk alongside you.
